How to Safely Clear Paper Jams and Prevent Roller Feed Errors

Why Paper Jams Occur

A paper jam occurs when a sheet of paper fails to move smoothly through the printer feed mechanism at the expected mechanical speed. Optical and physical sensors along the paper path track the front and trailing edges of each page. If a sensor does not trip at the expected millisecond, the firmware halts the rollers to prevent motor burnout.

Common Causes of Paper Jams

• Worn or dusty pickup rollers: Over time, microscopic paper dust coats the rubber pickup rollers, reducing their grip and causing sheets to enter the feed path crookedly.
• Incorrect paper loading: Overfilling the paper tray or failing to adjust the paper width guides tightly against the stack leads to skewed paper feeds.
• High humidity or static: Damp paper absorbs moisture and sticks together, causing the rollers to pull two or three sheets simultaneously (multi-feed).
• Torn fragments from a previous jam: Even a tiny 5mm scrap of paper left inside the roller carriage can trip an optical sensor flag, triggering a constant false paper jam error.

The Golden Rule of Clearing Jams

Always pull paper in the direction of normal paper travel. Never pull backward against the direction of the gears unless the manufacturer instructions explicitly recommend it. Pulling backward can strip delicate plastic gear teeth or bend the internal sensor flags.

How to Clean Rubber Pickup Rollers

To restore grip and stop recurring misfeeds: power off and unplug the printer, locate the rubber pickup rollers inside the tray or rear feeder, and gently wipe the rubber surfaces with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water. Allow the rollers to dry completely before reloading paper.
